Abstract Worldwide, HEIs strive to provide the best possible training for their PGRs, next generation of researchers. PGRs engagement is crucial a successful completion training, however, research on experiences limited. Moreover, number international has increased steadily over last decade, which poses question whether have different levels compared local PGRs. Therefore, thus study aimed at filling this gap by investigating mechanisms that influence these groups students. The paper focuses dimensions (1) students’ with supervisor, (2) within department, and (3) cognitive engagement, taking mixed-method approach draws Irish PGR StudentSurvey.ie 2019 data 14 semi-structured interviews conducted Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in 2021. findings indicate differences between students are mainly influenced perceived financial security familiarity institutional structures environments, mediated relationship ultimately time available engagement. will be relevant policymakers as they offer insights into how challenges can mitigated through supervisor support encourage higher
